Wire Brick Edging and  “Tough as Nails”

  • Lowest cost edging and 10” steel spikes on the market.
  • Wire Brick Edging can be installed inside & under the pavers or outside of the pavers.
  • The only edging that can be installed under the pavers after they have been cut and laid
  • No “dead grass zones" along the edge of the pavers.  Grass grows flush to the pavers.
  • “Tough as Nails” can be used on all types of edging: wire, plastic and aluminum.
  • “Tough as Nails” are packaged in re-sealable plastic buckets with handles.
  • Effortless sweeping bends with no flat spots.
  • No time consuming cutting or extra parts required to make curves or 90 degree bends.
  • Made from long lasting, heavy galvanized wire.  Not affected by sunlight, heat, or cold.
  • Make sharp 90 degree bends with no tools. Eliminates rounded and broken plastic 90’s.

Wire Brick Edging Installation Procedure

Excavation and Site Preparation:

Locate all underground utilities and make sure they will not interfere with the edging installation. Excavate excess soils and unstable sub base, prepare and compact the base materials as recommended by your brick manufacturer, ICPI standards or the architect’s specifications. Do not use aggregate whose largest size exceeds ¾”. Make sure there are no elevation differences greater that ⅜”and extend the recommended compacted base at least 6” past the paver line.

Install Wire Brick Edging

Install Better Bilt Wire Brick Edging on the compacted aggregate base, (not on the screeded sand) either before or after the installation of the pavers, stake, apply sand layer and pavers, backfill areas next to the wire brick edging, and tamp backfill prior to vibration compaction of the pavers. If using filter cloth (recommended) place about 12” of filter fabric on the compacted base under where the pavers will rest prior to placing the sand layer and fold fabric over the wire brick edging and simultaneously stake Wire Brick Edging and fabric to compacted base, apply sand layer and pavers, sweep fine sand into joints, backfill areas next to the wire brick edging, and tamp backfill prior to vibration compaction of the pavers.

If a project requires that next to the pavers a loose rock or bark area is specified, place 12” of filter fabric on the compacted base under where the pavers will rest, put down sand and pavers, remove excess sand then fold the fabric over the wire brick edging and butt the wire brick edging against the pavers and then stake the fabric and wire brick edging simultaneously with tough as nails to create a sand barrier to prevent sand from migrating. (Depending on traffic loads, use our “Tough as Nails” spikes or our heavy- duty border edging spikes to anchor the edging in 12”, 18”, or 24” intervals.

Once the final compaction cycle has been completed on the pavers, the edging should not be visible after backfilling. Compact pavers as required in project specifications or refer to the ICPI standards.
